Why should we not use “beef stew” as a password?
It is not stroganoff! (strong enough)
If you still do not understand the joke, stroganoff is a beef dish! If you are still interested in it, you can find many wonderful recipes online that will impress your friends and family! However, as the joke implies above, the words “beef stew” is not strong enough to be considered a good password. If you have not heard this before, it is worth covering now: one of the simplest things we can do to secure our accounts and computers is to use strong passwords!
On this blog you will find many articles on password policies and why they are critical to your cyber safety. I will cover some recommendations below when creating a password:
- Password length – Passwords should be required to be at a minimum length of 8-10 characters
- Password complexity – Users should be required to include a mix of alpha and numeric characters in their passwords.
- DO NOT include common words in your passwords, such as “password” or names, etc.
- DO NOT reuse passwords on multiple accounts, as they can compromise one or more than one of their accounts.
- DO NOT share their passwords with anyone, either online or in person.
