College Statistics Using R & SQL

Having spent over a year out of college…..and since my last 4 posts have been about sports….. I thought it would be interesting to switch things up and do a post about colleges! For this post, I used statistics from the US Department of Education and decided to do some research undergraduate admission statistics for my alma mater, Boston College, and my current college, Northeastern University. I really liked this analysis because it allowed me to utilize a little bit of SQL while using R. I will place the code at the end of this post as always.

Introduction

Boston College is a private Jesuit Catholic research university located in the village of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, United States, 6 miles west of downtown Boston. It has 9,100 full-time undergraduates and almost 5,000 graduate students. Northeastern University is a private research university in Boston, Massachusetts, established in 1898. It is categorized as an R1 institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

For this analysis, I will look at undergraduate enrollment rate, Annual Cost, Admission Rate, Undergraduates Getting Biology Degrees, Median SAT Math Scores, and Completion Rate.

Results:

Boston College Statistics

Northeastern University Statistics

Conclusions

Well, there are your admission statistics for two premier Boston – Based Universities. NOw I would normally compare the two and offer my conclusion on which is the better investment but they both have served me well these past years. Thus I will conclude by saying both Universities offer their own strengths and I am happy to have a part in both communities. Thank you guys for reading. Below you can find the code I used!
