Baseball is finally back! The New York Yankees opened their season on Tuesday (thanks to the Monday rain out) against the Houston Astros. Carlos Correa stole the show for the Astros as he had 2 stolen bases, a homer, and a controversial dribbler to first base that sealed the W for the Astros. While re-watching the highlights of the game I could not help but to think that Carlos Correa reminded me a lot of Alex Rodriguez during his earlier days as a Seattle Mariner. Thus for this analysis, I will be using R to compare the two players and see how similar they really are. In case you are not familiar with Carlos Correa, please see below:
Now that you know a little about him, lets see what similarities he shares with A-Rod.
- Carlos Correa was selected first overall out of high school in 2012…..Alex Rodriguez was first overall out of high school in 1993.
- Both made their debut at the position of shortstop for a team in the American League West Division.
- Carlos is 6’4 and 215 pounds, while Alex is 6’3 and 225…similar stature.
- They are both of Latino Heritage (this one is a throw in).
As you can see they do have interesting similarities. However, does Carlos Correa’s production match that of Alex Rodriguez’ early days? Lets compare these players first 100 games in the majors:
As you can see, they are scarily similar through the first 100 games. And even more noteworthy is that fact that Carlos Correa surpasses A-Rod in all these categories. Keep in mind that Alex Rodriguez is a player that is closing in on 700 all time home runs. If this kid continues on this path he has the potential to shatter all offensive records. This kid is going to be scary good.
And that wraps up this analysis! I conclude that Carlos Correa is not only similar to an young Alex Rodriguez (or as an old friend would say “Yung Alex”) he is better and poised for much success.
