For three days, over 250 global developers, designers, and entrepreneurs accepted the challenge to build something that would foster better health for their communities and the world. They were hacking healthcare at the first ever HLTH Hackathon at the Aria in Las Vegas. These hackers were tasked with building solutions that solved cross-functional challenges given by seven different sponsors including athenahealth, Fitbit, Helix, Office of the Chief Technology Officer, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Redox, Softheon, and Tokbox.

At the Hackathon, Integration Design experts Ravel Charles and Gillian Cowen gave a talk about the athenahealth API and coached hackers through tips and tricks of integrating quickly with athenahealth.

athenahealth had the highest utilization of an API with a total of 20 team project submissions. The athenahealth winning team was IRIS, composed of Bryan Knouse and Timothy Working.

They made use of transcription software to identify key words during a patient’s encounter at a clinic and map them to the discrete data fields in athenaNet.

In addition, they were able to create templated Orders and Claims while the provider spoke directly to the patient, providers could then review these documents prior to submitting to athenaNet. Their awarded prize included $2500 in amazon gift cards, two oculus and 2 apple airpod headphones.

athenaHealth and MDP are excited to continue to build relationships with some of these inspiring teams, who are working to build a brighter tomorrow for our Providers and their communities.
