Personal Opinion: Security Risks for Open Source vs. Closed Source Software

The following is a very quick post on the security risks between open source and closed sourced software. I hope you find this post to be useful in deciding which type of software you should use in your organization.

  • Open source software is software which is available to the public via Internet download and agreement to accompanying license terms.
  • Closed source software is software developed privately and not publicly available for modification.

Security attacks can severely damage a system in which the open source software is used. These attacks include viruses, spyware, macros and trap doors. However, these attacks are same ones that affect closed source software as well. Therefore, I believe that all software, whether open or closed, are similarly at risk for security attacks. Whether or not to use open or closed source development model is at the preference of the developers and their vision of the product.
